Shri. V. S. Achuthanandan, Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala, inaugurated the Mastering e-Governance and Launch of PGDeG programme at a function organized by IIITMK and IMG at Travancore Hall, Technopark on 08.10.2009. Chief Minister, in his inaugural address, told that networking of all Government offices is vital for effective e-Governance and this process is almost complete. The Akshaya and Friends Citizen centres will be strengthened to enhanced their services. Government has already implemented citizen call centres, computerization of files and e-Krishi programme for rural farmers.

The objectives of the programme is to generate human resources with the right skills, knowledge, aptitude and leadership qualities for effective implementation of e-Governance projects in the state. There are 45 seats for the course, of which 15 seats are reserved for Kerala Government employees. The remaining seats are for public sector and general candidates.

The Government of Kerala proposed this programme based on the recommendations of the Administrative Reforms Commission, to produce trained professionals to implement and manage e-Governance projects in a disciplined manner. The program is targeted to generate human resources with the right skills, knowledge, aptitude and leadership qualities for effective implementation of e-Governance projects.

The function was presided by M A Vaheed, MLA. Dr. Ajay Kumar, IT Secretary, Sri. Piyush Gupta, General Manager NISG, D. Krishnan, Principal Consultant, National e-Governance Group, Ms. Joan McCalla, CISCO, Sri. Mervin Alexander, CEO, Technopark, Dr. Elizabeth Sherly, Director, IIITM-K and Dr. R. Prakasam, Professor, IMG also attended the function.

After the formal function, a technical session was conducted. Sri. Piyush Gupta talked about Pillars of e-Government. Ms. Joan McCalla had delivered a presentation on Role of e-Governance Leaders and D. Krishnan talked about Human Resource Capacity for National e-Governance Plan. More than 150 participants were present at the meeting.

SPEED IT Scholarship for Masters programme at IIITM-K

Master of Science in Information Technology and M Phil in Ecological Informatics have been included under the Special Postgraduate Education Expansion Drive in IT (Speed-IT) launched by the IT Department of Kerala State Government. It is a fact that many students secured good percentile in GATE and CAT examinations are not getting admission in reputed universities and colleges for higher studies. Also the number of seats available for post graduate studies in Kerala is considerably very low. The SPEED-IT programme will therefore prompt the students to seriously consider higher studies.

This was announced by the Chief Minister at a state level inauguration of SPEED IT at the campus of College of Engineering, Trivandrum on 30.09.2009. Under this programme eligible candidates will get scholarships as per Government of Kerala Norms. First preference will be given to GATE qualified students but not in receipt of GATE scholarship. Minimum marks for the scholarship shall be 65% in (GPA 7.0) the qualifying examination. Usual relaxation for reserved candidates is allowed. The function was presided by Sri. M. Vijayakumar, Hon'ble Minister for Law & Parliamentary Affairs. Sri. M.A. Baby, Hon. Minister for Education and Culture delivered the Key-note address. Dr. Ajay Kumar, Secretary to IT and Director, IMG gave the opening remarks. Mr. Kuruvilla P John, Principal Secretary to Higher Education delivered the speech. Dr. Kuncheria P Issac welcomed the gathering. Dr. Elizabeth Sherly, Director, IIITM-K and Mr. Vijayakumar, principal, Govt College, Trissur marked the felicitation. Dr. S Latha, Principal, College of Engineering, Trivandrum gave the vote of Thanks.

Dr. T. K. Manojkumar of IIITM-K delivered an invited talk entitled "Application of Computational Methods in Organic Chemistry" at EDUCHEM - 2009 "Theoretical Models with Computers for Chemical Phenomena" sponsered by UGC, organized by SN College, Punalur on 15th Oct. 2009

Librarian gives 37th Five Laws Lecture

IIITM-K Librarian Sri. Sainul Abideen delivered 37th Five Laws Lecture organised by Documentation Research & Training Centre (DRTC) and Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science. 'Five Laws Lectures' are organised annually in memory late Prof. SR Ranganathan, father of Indian Library Science. 37th lecture was delivered on 30th Sept 2009 at SRELS, Bangalore on the topic "Blogging for Library and Information Services". Blogging - one of the web 2.0 application- is very much useful for providing many library services online. IIITM-K has been using blogging for its information services and has got wide attention and appreciation from various corners of the World.
