IIITM-K set to move to its own campus next year

IIITM-K has finalized the preliminaries for construction of its own campus within the Technopak campus. M/s Habitat Technology Group is the architect and M/s. KAP (India) Projects and Constructions Pvt. Ltd., Thrissur has been awarded the contract for construction of the main building. In the first phase IIITM-K plans to have a multi storied building of 33000 sq.ft. area. Boomi Pooja was performed at the site on 17.12.09 in the presence of Dr. Ajaykumar, IAS, Principal Secretary IT, Government of Kerala, Shri Mervin Alexander, Chief Executive Officer, Technopark, Other invited guests, Faculty, staff and students of IIITMK. IIITM-K has been aspiring to have its own campus since inception in the year 2000, which is coming true now. The targeted date of completion is in December 2010.


KISSAN Kerala Project receives first Kerala State e-Governance Award

Kissan Kerala, project has bagged the First Kerala State e-governance Award under the category; Online Services for its innovative web-driven activities to enable agricultural outreach initiatives in the state. The award was constituted by Govt. of Kerala.

KISSAN-Kerala, is an integrated multi-modal agricultural information system, conceptualized, implemented and coordinated by Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Kerala (IIITM-K) for the Department of Agriculture, Govt. of Kerala.

The award was received jointly by Sri. R. Ajithkumar, Chief Project Coordinator KISSAN and Dr. Elizabeth Sherly, Director (I/c), IIITM-K from Shri V.S. Achuthanandan, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala at an award function held on 8th December 2009 at Trivandrum. The core KISSAN KERALA team members also attended the award function. The award carries a Certificate of Excellence and a trophy. KISSAN KERALA has bagged several national and international awards for its successful integration of various farmer centric services.

IIITM-K Library extended Special Membership in International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries

IIITM-K Library has been extended Special Associate Membership in the International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries (IATUL). This was announced in the recent IATUL conference held in Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. IIITM-K is the first Library in Kerala to become member in IATUL and 14th member in the Country. Other members from India include 4 IITs and major Universities.

IATUL was founded in Düsseldorf, Germany in May 1955, which is an international non-governmental organisation of a group of libraries, represented by their library directors or senior managers, who have responsibility for information services and resources management.

Through this membership, IIITMK Library will be able to participate in the IATUL Cross Country Cooperation Projects, Library Twinning Initiatives, the Special Interest Group Framework and other collaborative activities of the partnering institutions spread across the world.

An International conference on Scientific Computing with Python (Scipy.in) was organized by FOSSEE and SPACE, between 12-17 December 2009 at Travancore Hall, Technopark, Trivandrum. Mr. Travis Oliphant , Vice President of Enthought Inc.(USA) was the guest of honour and keynote speaker. Mr. R Narayanan, Former Vice President of TCS presided over the function. Dr. Elizabeth Sherly, Director (I/c), IIITM-K, Mr. Jarrod Millman, Director of Computing, Berkeley's Neuroscience Institute, Dr. Prabhu Ramachandran, Conference Co-Chair, FOSSEE, IIT Bombay were the speakers at the inaugural session. Postgraduate students of IIITM-K attended the Python workshop where the lectures and exercises were given by Mr. Asokan Pichai and his team. Mr. David Mathews, Design Engineer IIITM-K attended the conference and workshop. One of the goals of the conference was to combine education, engineering and science with computing through the medium of Python.


Invited Talk

Dr. C.S.P. Iyer delivered an invited talk on Friday, the 18th of December 2009 at the Sophisticated Testing and Instrumentation Centre (STIC), CUSAT. on "Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and its Applications". He traced the genesis of ICP, starting with Flame Photometry through Arc, Spark, the forerunners of emission techniques. He emphasized the importance of statistical methods in sampling and in Analysis and its particular relevance in Quality Assurance.

Ms. Sajayasree K K has joined IIITMK as Senior Lecturer on 17th December 2009. She has about 10 years of teaching experience with National Institute of Technology, Calicut as faculty in Computer Science and Engineering Department. She did her Master of Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and B Tech from Government College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram.


Library Staff Receive Award

Mr. Shameer KK Ms. Shyama C , Digital Library Trainees, of the institute secured 2nd rank and 3rd rank respectively in the BLISc Examination conducted by the University of Calicut 2008. They were felicitated by an award constituted by Farook College Parent Teacher Association. Dr Gafoor Kalliyath (Joint Secretary PTA, MD Kalliyath Group of Companies) distributed the award in the presence of Principal Prof.A.Kuttialikutty in a function held at Farook College.

Mr.Radhakrishnan, Chief Technology Officer at IIITM-K delivered an invited talk at the International Workshop on Geospatial Information for Developing Countries: Science and Technology jointly organized by Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), IIT Bombay, and Department of Computer Science, University of Minnesota, USA under the Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF), held in IIT, Mumbai between 16th - 18th December 2009 (http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/gise/workshop). Shri Radhakrishnan presented; “Web GIS for Soil and Weather Information System” designed and developed by IIITMK as part of the National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP). Over 100 delegates from different parts of the world attended the workshop and the topic received wide acclaim.
