Computer Science
Issues:
- Availability of visual material:
Campus-based Video on demand will be the solution in the long run. Video on demand on cable.
- Logistics of issuing CD's
- Need to make these sessions interactive?
- Course should have a website and forum
- Education Grid of IIITM-K could provide services for deployment.
- NPTEL portal will have a link to a discussion group/help desk.
- NPTEL material should be searchable, indexed, etc.
- More courses in other disciplines will be added
- Computer Science teaching issues:
- Additional material needed for teaching: exams, homework problems, etc.
- Users (teachers from colleges) should contribute problems, exercises, exam questions etc.
- Advanced courses (like Nanotechnology) are needed.
- How do teachers plan to use this material?
- Edusat didn't work as well. Adoption by students was a problem. Operational aspects have not been fully addressed.
- Edusat worked very well. 6 lakh villages have the opportunity to get education now thanks to Edusat. JNTU and VTU have successfully used it. 34 Engg. colleges are using it.
- Effective use of material may be limited by the structure of college affiliations, etc.
- NPTEL material is to be used only as supplementary material.
- IT syllabus is out of date. How can NPTEL help?
- IIT's plan to stick to mostly basic and fundamental subjects.
- Technology oriented material should be built with industry's
help.
- Infrastructure is a big issue. Support from management is needed.
- Should NPTEL content be mandated by a govt. body?
