Ideas for Improving MSIT
From IIITM-k-wiki
This open forum is for contributing ideas that will improve our MSIT Programme. There are three ways in which you can contribute to this online brainstorming.
- By reading these pages and absorbing these ideas
- By contributing new ideas (by editing this page)
- By discussing ideas (use the discussion tab).
Please note that at this point, this page is more like a white board for people to put ideas down. They are in no particular order. Your ideas will be used by the Academic Committee to come up with a final document of recommendations, which will again go through a process of review before being adopted as a policy.

Interleave soft skills course with other courses on a continuous basis
Students will learn soft skills only when they apply them. The soft skills course should use as a 'laboratory' all the other courses in the institute to evaluate students on their soft skills. These include class participation, presentation, effective oral and written communication (participation in news groups, wikis, etc.) and technical documentation.
News Alerts in Desktop/laptop
I found a new way of getting news alerts, I installed it today. And sitting in front of the computer we'll be alerted by latest news by CNN. There are many News alert services are available.

Integrate the material across courses
Students should be encouraged to consciously make connections across various courses. As an example, material from from the computer science group of courses: Discrete Maths, Principles of Programming, and Data structures and also Databases must be carefully connected. The big advantage of this is concept reuse. Concepts, when reused are reinforced. This will also allow students to appreciate the relevance of some of the more theoretical and fundamental ideas. Course on Cryptology or Network/Information Security with emphasis on biological modelling can be offered as an elective as there are students here who had Biology at 10+2 level. A blend of cross-disciplinary course structure will illustrate the complex concepts of one and application in other domain really worthwile.
Such concept integration can also be done for the systems group of courses: Computer Organization, Operating Systems, Networks and Embedded Systems. The groups may also overlap (e.g., Web technology will span both group). Or new groups could be created e.g., software and applications which a hybrid of Software Engineering, Web Technologies and Databases.
Student research projects must be encouraged
Students should be encouraged to work with faculty on an individual or group basis from the start of their programme. This will give the students a lead on what they are interested in, and will also give the faculty to build more rapport with the students. Students must get an opportunity to know what research and development is about and how they can contribute. After all, these are masters level students.
