ERNET backbone
ERNET backbone is a sophisticated link of terrestrial and satellite-based wide area networks. The satellite WAN, using VSAT technology. The VSAT network acts as an overlay for the terrestrial WAN by providing backup links between the backbone sites. International connectivity is achieved through gateways at New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata, with a total capacity of 6.64 Mb. Daily traffic over ERNET exceeds 20 GB. ERNET architecture is based on industry standard TCP/IP protocol.
ERNET backbone is being enabled to support IPv6. The advantages of IPv6 are following Larger address space (128 bit addressing)
- Plug and play (Auto-configuartion)
- Auto neighbor discovery
- Aggregation of routes (Super netting and Sub netting)
- Better IP header management
- Quality of service (Flow Labellings Capability)
- Inbuilt security features (Authentication and Security)
ERNET international gateway and PoP sites
The ERNET is supported by the following backbone sites which enable organizations located at different geographical locations to access various services
- ERNET Head Quarter, New Delhi
- Center for Development of Advance Software Computing, Mumbai
- Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
- Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai
- Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune

IIITM-Kerala, Point of Presence site, ERNET, India
The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management – Kerala, (IIITM-K) was established in 2000 by the Government of Kerala as Kerala’s premier institution of higher learning in the area of Information Technology and allied fields. Presently, IIITM-Kerala is handling the responsibility of a node of ERNET in Kerala. According to MOU signed between ERNET India and IIITM-K
- IIITM-K will share with ERNET the responsibility for maintaining quality of service (QOS) of ERNET in the area handled by IIITM-K.
- IIITM-K will provide ERNET connectivity to research and educational institutions as per the charter of the society and the membership guidelines.
- IIITM-K shall nominate a permanent faculty as the person in-charge of the PoP
ERNET, India have installed a PoP at IIITM-K, in terms of equipment and links with 2Mbps bandwidth. The cost of the equipment, the links and bandwidth is paid by ERNET India in full.
