Preamble

This course introduces the participant to fundamental concepts in ITS, the tools and technologies used in ITS, and example projects where such systems are used. Particular emphasis is placed on ITS in India.

One presentation of a topic of interest: each student is expected to make a 15-minute lecture on a topic of interest, to be decided on with the instructor.

Course Objectives

  • Introduce the fundamental concepts in Intelligent Transportation Systems.
  • Explore in detail Image Processing based ITS solutions, which is the cutting edge in road side traffic data collection
  • Describe technologies used for traffic law enforcement
  • Study in detail ITS technologies that are best suited for developing countries – technologies that help make best use of available infrastructure.

Learning Module I

  • Traffic Flow Parameters: Speed, Spot Speed, Running Speed, Journey Speed, Density, Average Speed, Time Mean Speed, Space Mean Speed, Time Headway, Distance Headway, Travel Time
  • ITS System Architecture, Functional areas

Learning Module II

  • GIS in ITS: GIS based TMC’s, Examples, In Car Navigation Systems, Fleet Management, Incident management
  • ITS in Developing Countries, ITS in India
  • Parking Management Systems

Learning Module III

  • Image processing fundamentals: Image sensing, acquisition, sampling, quantization, Image operations, Histogram processing, template matching, colour models, colour segmentation, background estimation, foreground extraction, moving object detection, edge detection, line detection
  • Introduction to OpenCV, Case Study

Learning Module IV

  • ITS for Traffic Law Enforcement: Speed Cameras, Section Speed, Emission enforcement
  • Sensors in ITS: Traffic Cameras, Induction Loops, CCTV cameras, RFID, Laser, Bluetooth, Cellphones, Satellite Imaging.

Learning Module V

  • Electronic Tolling: Electronic Tolling Technologies, Comparison, Case study (Bombay-Pune highway)
  • Advanced License Plate Recognition, Overview of a leading ANPR System.
  • Travel Time: Travel Times, Travel Time Estimation, Travel Time Prediction
  • Future Trends in ITS
