Office Hours
Office hours are hours reserved for 1-1 interaction of the students at the instructor's office. Others are welcome, but students enrolled for the instructor's course get priority.
Objectives
To enhance the oral and written communication capabilities of participants; to tune the participants for effective managerial analyses of problems and situations and help them present it to different audiences successfully and to strengthen the participants’ positive psychological dispositions with a view to make them high caliber professionals in future.
Course structure
Active student participation is expected in this course. Case analysis, group assignments and lectures will form part of the methodology.
Syllabus
Showcasing – Participant’s Communication., Managerial analyses and case method, Language laboratory, Developing Individual’s communication capabilities, Oral Communication, Written Analyses, Effective communication, Communication skill as decision facilitating aid, Electronic Page, NLP, Transaction analysis, Psychometrics analysis, Interpersonal relations.
- Showcasing Participant’s communication:Spontaneous communication and responding to others- Practice sessions for students.
- Managerial analyses and case method: Types of managerial analyses, relevance of managerial analyses, relevance of case method, identifying issues in a case and problem solving.
- Language laboratory: Diction, accent, and other tips for higher-level English language and communication.
- Developing Individual’s Communication: Identifying deficiency index of each students on seven Variables crucial to successful communication- Input for deficiency reduction in individual communication.
- Oral Communication: Structure of Speech, art of delivery, small talk, oral presentation principles and tips for public speaking.
- Written Analyses: Letter writing, essay and précis writing, notes taking from lectures and reference materials written presentation of technical material, preparation of bibliography, office correspondence, preparing biodata, framework and content of project report/working paper.
- Effective communication:
- Slide preparation (Power point viewer) and oral presentation; practice sessions for preparation and presentation of paper/project assignment.
- Group discussions on topics of interest; feedback to students on their performance in leading group discussions and in their response to others’ views fo arriving at consensus, etc.
- Art of interviewing, negotiating, conducting meetings.
- Press release/advertisement copy: content and layout.
- Media design: Text and CD ROM/Floppy disk creating; Virtual Web-site (Front Page Express)
- Communication skills as decision facilitating aid:
- Situational thinking and problem solving through logical analysis of problem / case situation and present written report. Aspects covered to include defining the problem, development of objectives, use of evidence, process of making assumptions, evolving criteria for judgment, analysis of recommendation(s).
- Data evaluation and applications review of passages / reports.

The tentative weight for individual components of the course is
- Lecture presentation: 15%
- Attendance: 5%
- Term Paper: 20%
- Individual participation: 15%
- Final Exam: 30%
