Course Objective: In areas like community development, education, e-governance, agriculture, health, environment, R&D and such others, we need to look into new kinds of distributed information-interaction-collaboration systems, and virtual enterprises for services delivery models with distributed ownership of components in the services. Using the institute's experiences of developing KISSAN, Education Grid and some more on the drawing boards, the course will delineate the differences between conventional IT enabled services and e-Governance and the emerging paradigms of community knowledge networks and issues centered developments of e-governance systems and IT Enabled Extension Services. The course will specifically cover the following topics.

  • Overview of Web-enabled information systems.
  • Metadata and protocol frameworks in distributed Information Systems Organization. and Architectures. Examples of Dublin Core, DSpace, PMH (protocol for metadata harvesting) and open access publishing.
  • Enterprise Applications Integration; Basics of Knowledge Management; and Virtual Enterprises.
  • Distributed frameworks in KM and Services Delivery in extension services.
  • Methods of ensuring robustness, availability and effectiveness of services delivery.
  • Case study of KISSAN, E-Krishi.
  • The Computational Chemistry Portal as case study.
  • Open Knowledge and Collaboration Grids for Education and Research - On how we enhance Education Grid.
  • Geo-logistics case development.
  • Development of Project Proposals by students.
