2007 Apr 9th. IIITM-K Informal Workshop on Software Science Education
From IIITM-k-wiki
Location Travancore Hall, Technopark Trivandrum.
Date Monday, Apr 9th, 2007
Time 1:30pm - 5:30pm
Objective
Software Education in our colleges is mostly driven by a 'bible'-book culture in which the student spends an enormous amount of time cramming language syntax and system "features". Clearly, there are better ways to impart education in software, one that is perhaps based on foundations and a hands-on "learning-by-doing" approach.
Over the last few months, several of us at IIITM-K and outside have been involved in lively discussions and some
action on how to teach Software, Computer Science, Computational
Sciences and IT in ways that are rooted in a more scientific approach to
their education than the fragmented method of teaching them as catalog
list of courses.
One outcome of this initiative is the IIITM-K Course on Principles of Programming available on a wiki. It got wide publicity in Bangalore where Dr. T B Dinesh spoke about the course at the recent Bangalore Bar Camp event. An observation by Dr.Dinesh that the software teaching and software development are really two sides of the same process appears to be increasingly validated. Our early experience here also shows that subjects like Software Engg., Data Structures and Algorithms and Web-Technologies are no longer isolated instances of courses to be taught, but derive strength from cross-linkages built over the Principles of Programming and other similar and foundational courses.
The goal of this informal workshop is to brainstorm in how we can restructure Software Science and Engineering Education in Indian colleges so that it is more enjoyable and effective.
Format and Tentative Schedule
The workshop will consist of several 20 minute presentations followed by a panel discussion. This will be followed by presentations from anyone else who is interested in making a presentation. The time for each presentation will depend on the number of people volunteering to speak. If you are interested in giving a talk, please contact one of the following below:
