VISION

IIITM-K is a premier institution of excellence in Science, Technology and Management related to Information that develops professionals and leaders of high calibre imbued with values of entrepreneurship, ethics and social responsibility. IIITM-K will actively promote higher education and industry across Kerala and beyond through its IT facilitated education programs and services.

MISSION

IIITM-K's Mission is to be an institution of excellence in education, research, development, and training in basic and applied Information Technology and Management and to be a leader in educational networking and services provider for higher education and professions. The institute will help the region's development through its education, expertise and services and thereby make it an attractive destination for hi-tech industry.

Besides its core academic and research programs, the institute will support HRD for industry, teacher's training for colleges, IT ventures incubation, multimedia authoring for faculty and experts, and development of IT and IT enabled services for the region.

The institute will provide a pedagogically effective learning ambience through extensive educational technology support and Web enhanced education to its students, faculty, research staff, and the participants in its training programs. In keeping with the times, the institute will focus on learner-centric education that encourages learning by creative enquiry, group work, discovery and practice with the freedom of interaction not restricted by classroom boundaries.

The institute will strive to equip its graduates to keep pace with the changes in technologies by inculcating a world-view of what they learn so that they can apply the same to the challenges of the market and social needs. IIITM-K will ensure that the education imparted will imbue its graduates with values of learning, leadership qualities and social responsibility.

Information Technology is not a subject in isolation. IIITM-K will strive to produce graduates of excellence in IT and Management who can shape IT to the services of technology, society and education. The institute will use IT extensively in every conceivably useful way for conducting its academic, research and training programs.

ORIGIN

The State of Kerala has excelled in the sphere of literacy and has been a guiding example and inspiration for the other states in India. The state enjoys excellent primary and secondary schooling systems that guarantee affordable education to its people. The state also enjoys many good science and arts colleges and is well known for its medical and nursing institutions. However, in the sphere of engineering and technology education, the state has somewhat lagged behind its neighbours, necessitating many local students to seek admissions in institutions outside the state.

With this background in view and the need for the state to take positive steps towards establishing leadership in the fast growing Information Technology field, a high-power committee consisting of leading figures of Industry, Academia and Government was constituted by the Government of Kerala, to initiate steps towards establishing a premier institute of Information Technology and Management. Based on the deliberations of the committee, the Government of Kerala decided to set up the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K).

The Honorable Governor of Kerala, Sri Sukhdev Singh Kang, formally inaugurated the institute on November 23, 2000. The first batch of students was admitted in the month of March 2001 for the coveted Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT) of 18 months duration. The convocation of the first batch of students was held on April 7,2003. Shri F C Kohli, a father figure for the IT industry in India, awarded the degrees to this pioneer batch of students. The leading Indian software giant, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is the creation of Sri Kohli who built the company virtually from scratch way back in 1960s when software was even not heard of.

The first batch PGDIT students were enthusiastically received by the software industries and almost all of them got excellent placements in reputed IT companies. The second and third batches of students also got excellent campus placements. The fourth batch of students were admitted in July 2004.

LOCATION

Amidst the enthralling verdant green and sylvan surroundings of the Technopark Campus, the Institute enjoys the best possible natural and hi-tech ambience available anywhere. Thiruvananthapuram, at the southern tip of peninsular India has an equatorial climate (at 8º latitude) with dense green tree cover. National Geographic has identified this area among the top 50 most beautiful spots in the world. This region is one of the most sought after tourist spots.The Technopark. a software park, has seen rapid growth, attracting over 50 software companies from 14 countries and the TCS Training School. The park employs over 5000 IT professionals, and is adding about 2,00,000 Sq ft of built-up space every year. The Institute is presently operating from centrally air conditioned space of about 10,000 sft. in the Park Centre Building and 15,000 sft. in the Nila Building of Technopark. The Institute is expected to get a 15 acre campus of its own very soon in the land being acquired by Technopark. Experienced professionals from the Technopark companies and TCS Training Centre are inducted as Adjunct Faculty and help impart practical knowledge to our students. The Technopark companies provide our students to work on exciting projects during their internships and also offer our excellent job and career opportunities. Located as we are in Technopark which has the distinction of not losing a single working day so far we also enjoy the same privilege and are able to adhere to a pre-announced academic calender.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The salient features of infrastructure at the institute are:

High end computing resources and software: IIITM K has high-end computing and network resources for the academic and research programs. The students and research staff have access to latest software tools and systems to execute real-life projects.

Round the clock access to laboratory and Internet: The students, researchers, faculty and technical staff have the privilege of 24 hours lab access and uninterrupted Internet access. The Students Hostel is also networked to facilitate peer-to-peer communication and provide the Internet facility.

Industry collaboration: IIITM-K is closely associated with leading IT companies to support our academic programs and projects. The world-renowned IT giants such as SUN Microsystems, CISCO, IBM, Rational have associated with the institute by providing their expertise and support to various academic and research programmes.

Embedded Systems Laboratory: IIITM-K has established an embedded system laboratory and has launched a course on embedded systems and advanced networking in June 2003. The above courses have been designed with twin-objectives of providing the participants a strong foundation of embedded and networking technologies, systems and applications and industry oriented hands-on practical training. To achieve these objectives, the institute has setup a "scalable facility" for Educational & Industrial training and development in the area. This facility includes appropriate tools & hardware to give participants an exposure to both Embedded Linux development platforms and High-end Real-Time Operating Systems such as Tornado/VxWorks.

Prometric Center: To support the academic program IIITM-K established the Prometric center for taking various certifications. IIITM_K had been the authorized Prometric center for IBM, DB2, Rational, CISCO etc. The facility has been discontinued for sometime and is expected to be revived soon.

• Academic support programs and services over the Web for colleges, universities, industry and other organizations to facilitate the    creation of large numbers of IT graduates and professionals from several colleges through its educational network services

• Close tie-ups and networking with experts and faculty of premier institutions and organizations both in India and abroad.

• Advanced library, including e-library and Web based services to all subscribing colleges, teachers, institutions, industry and   professionals.

• State-of-the-art multimedia authoring and content generation facilities for the development of quality e-courseware for higher   education and professions.

• Affiliation portal services for faculty from leading institutions, universities and experts and related programs encouraging them to   visit, interact and contribute to the development of quality multimedia e-courseware and IT facilitation of higher education.

• Promotion and hosting of an autonomous Educational Network Services enterprise with support from the IT industry. This enterprise   will serve colleges, industry and services organizations through its networking and technology support for Web enhanced education.

• Business and IT Ventures incubation facilities.

• Consultancy services for various information systems related projects

•Development and implementation of various information systems and IT Enabled services for academia, industry and government  agencies
